Transhipment at North Sea Canal Ports unchanged at 96.5 million t in 2016. Transhipment in the sea ports of the North Sea Canal Area, which includes the ports of Amsterdam, IJmuiden, Beverwijk and Zaanstad, was unchanged in 2016 compared to 2015 at 96.5 million t. The Port of Amsterdam achieved an increase of 0.4% to 78.8 million t last year, compared to 78.4 million t in 2015. These are provisional figures. The final figures will be available in a few weeks’ time.

At IJmuiden, transhipment fell 3.4% to 16.8 million t. Beverwijk saw its transhipment increase to 700 000 t (+133%), while there was a decline in Zaanstad to approximately 200 000 t (-33%).

The increase in Amsterdam was mainly due to a 5.8% rise in the transhipment of liquid bulk cargo products to 45.3 million t. Petrol and diesel products were up 7.5% at 42.4 million t. Transhipment of coal at 7.5% showed less of a decline compared to the previous year, falling to 16.1 million t. Transhipment of agribulk also declined by 14% to 6.4 million t. Other dry bulk, including ores and fertilisers, was up 5% to 8.4 million t.

The transhipment of containers was unchanged on the previous year at 600 000 t in 2016 (TEU 51 475). Ro/Ro, cars and other mixed cargo declined by 14% in 2016 from 2.1 million t to 1.9 million t.

On balance, 11 hectares of land were allocated to businesses in 2016. Port of Amsterdam thus achieved its target. Imports at the Port of Amsterdam were down 3% to 63.1 million t last year. Exports on the other hand were up by 7.9% at 33.4 million t. A total of 122 cruise ships visited Amsterdam in 2016 (2015: 139). The number of river cruise calls rose again, by 6% to 1876. The number of passengers for sea cruise ships remained more or less unchanged at 278 000, despite the decline in the number of sea cruise calls. This is due to the increased scale in this sector. There were 32 sea cruise calls at IJmuiden in 2016 (2015: 44).

Koen Overtoom, CEO of Port of Amsterdam, ‘The transhipment of oil products rose again, and we expect this to continue in the coming years. We remain fully committed to further strengthening the position of the Port of Amsterdam so that we continue to be the port of choice for customers and users. We will also continue our commitment to diversification into circular industry, offshore, large scale logistics and manufacturing.’
