Tanks and Terminals,
The projects, currently in various stages of execution, are part of a multi-annual investment programme designed to strengthen operational safety, improve operational flows, and maintain installations at the highest performance standards.
“Rompetrol Rafinare places strong emphasis on critical storage infrastructure by ensuring a high degree of operational reliability, reducing maintenance costs, and extending the lifespan of equipment. The new tanks and associated systems are designed in line with the latest industrial safety and environmental protection standards. At the same time, the programme will also bring a 20% increase in storage capacity for raw materials and petroleum products”, said Sorin Graure, General Director of Rompetrol Rafinare.
One completed project involved rebuilding a distillate tank, a key component in diesel production. The tank underwent a comprehensive programme of measurements and technical assessments, followed by the dismantling of the old structure and the construction of a new tank equipped with all necessary systems and safety elements for optimal operation. Its capacity was also increased from 5000 m3 to 6000 m3.
Similarly, the capacity of a gasoline tank will be increased from 5000 m3 to 6000 m3, while two other units used for storing diesel and components will be expanded from 10 000 m3 to 12 000 m3. Also, a crude oil tank with a capacity of 57 000 m3 is currently under modernisation.
An innovative element used in these projects is the application of hydraulic jacks, which allow the tank to be built starting from the roof and upper shell. This method significantly reduces risks associated with working at height and accelerates execution stages, contributing to a safer and more efficient process.
Each project requires mobilising approximately 100 specialists — designers, engineers, execution teams, refinery personnel, and subcontractors — from companies with extensive expertise in the field.
From 2007 to date, across the two refineries operated by Rompetrol Rafinare, Petromidia Navodari, and Vega Ploiesti, over 60 storage tanks were rehabilitated and upgraded.
The Petromidia refinery, one of the most modern and efficient in the region, processed almost 2.6 million t of raw materials in 1H26, resulting in a production of about 2.1 million t of fuels. Almost 70% of the petroleum products obtained were directed to the domestic market.
The Vega refinery, the only refinery in Romania specialised in special products (bitumen, hexane, ecological solvents), processed almost 164 thousand tons of raw materials in the first half of 2026, registering a record in bitumen production – 48 700 tons.
The significant shareholders of Rompetrol Rafinare SA are KMG International (54.63% — direct and indirect) and the Romanian State, through the Ministry of Energy (44.7%).
