Bidvest and Petredec announce LPG facility ground-breaking

Bidvest Tank Terminals and Petredec have today celebrated the start of construction on a 1 billion rand (R) mounded LPG import and storage facility in Richards Bay, South Africa.

Security and reliability of supply have been the biggest obstacles to the increased use of LPG in South Africa.

The facility will be the largest in Africa and will significantly increase the supply of LPG to South Africa and allow for exports of the fuel to neighbouring countries. South Africa currently uses approximately 400 000 tpy of LPG. The mounded LPG Facility is expected to increase this by 200 000 tpy.

The increased and sustainable supply will mean that the price of LPG will compete favourably with that of other energy sources, while an increased use of LPG in homes as opposed to alternatives such as wood and paraffin will ameliorate the significant health impacts of these fuels.
