International terminal operator AB KN Energies, in response to the growing interest of market participants and implementing the strategic goal of expanding the LNG value chain, is preparing to provide a biomethane virtual liquefaction service at the Klaipeda LNG terminal.

This service will allow biomethane producers and suppliers to effectively integrate their activities into the LNG logistics chain, and to sell gas produced in Lithuania, throughout Europe, and available in the common European gas network.

Such a model allows for a flexible and effective solution, relevant to both Lithuanian and foreign market participants looking for sustainable fuel alternatives. This initiative will also contribute to the goals of green transformation in maritime transport – especially considering the stricter requirements for the use of renewable fuels in shipping that will come into effect from 2025 in accordance with EU Regulation 2023/1805.

Klaipeda LNG terminal will be one of the first in Europe and the first in the region to offer such a service. Currently, only a few of the 28 operating European LNG terminals provide biomethane liquefaction or virtual liquefaction services. Therefore, this decision will significantly contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of the Klaipeda LNG terminal and diversifying the use of LNG infrastructure, without affecting the main function of the terminal – regasification.

The start of service provision is planned for 3Q25 – after all necessary preparatory stages, including the certification process, are completed.
