New Project Director for ACE Terminal

Published by , Editorial Assistant
Tanks and Terminals,

Egbert Vrijen has recently been appointed Project Director of the ACE Terminal project. ACE Terminal is the joint project of Gasunie, HES International and Vopak, in which they combine forces and knowledge to develop a terminal in the port of Rotterdam for the import of ammonia as a green hydrogen carrier.

Egbert Vrijen will lead the realisation of the ACE Terminal project together with the core team, consisting of representatives from the three partners.

Vrijen has 20 years of experience in capital-intensive industry, especially in the energy sector. He mostly led large-scale energy projects. In his previous role, he was project director of Athos, focused on capture, transport, storage and reuse of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the North Sea Canal region. Previously, he headed the Tender Management & Estimating department at Bluewater Energy Services and before that he was project manager for energy transition at Stadsverwarming Purmerend.

Hydrogen will play an important role in the energy transition. The future demand for green hydrogen carriers in Northwest Europe is much higher than can be produced locally from renewable sources. Therefore, there is a need to import green hydrogen on a large scale. ACE Terminal will facilitate its customers in the large-scale import of ammonia as a green hydrogen carrier.

The ACE Terminal project is making good progress and has received a lot of interest from the recent market consultation. Discussions with a large number of market players have provided insightful and valuable information, which can now be used to take the next steps for the development of the ACE Terminal.
