Advario hosts Hydrogen Council at Antwerp Gas Terminal

During the visit, Advario discussed the important role hydrogen carriers such as ammonia play in the development of a hydrogen economy, the European need for import and export facilities for ammonia, and Advario’s ambition to build ammonia storage facilities at one – or perhaps at some point both – terminals in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. The visit closed with a site tour of AGT, Advario's flagship gas terminal.

Safety was the main topic of conversation throughout the visit. “I enjoyed our discussions and am impressed with what I saw at AGT,” said Andrei V. Tchouvelev, director Safety & Regulatory at the Hydrogen Council. “The site does not store ammonia yet, so I focused on getting a feel for the safety culture, overall level of maintenance and the way the team prepares for the potential addition of ammonia storage. The Advario team at AGT is obviously well-prepared, possesses the know-how with regards to technology and engineering capability, and is well-aware of the nature of ammonia. I am very pleased.”

“It was a pleasure to host the council, and I am grateful for their input and kind words,” said Nancy De Groof, Advario’s Vice President, Belgium. “We believe in ammonia as a cornerstone of the clean energy mix, as an enabler of the hydrogen ecosystem, and are in advanced stages of a feasibility study, executed together with our partner Fluxys. The study explores the build of an ammonia import terminal in Antwerp.”

In that study, Advario contributed significant experience as an ammonia storage operator, having designed, built - and since 2017 - operated ammonia storage at its terminal in Nanjing, China. Nancy said: “Paired with AGT’s experience safely handling a wide variety of gases and strong track record operating refrigerated storage, the Advario team here in Belgium is ready. We are a partner for progress and look forward to contributing to the further development of the hydrogen ecosystem.”
